School Medication Policies

Medication

The Office of Catholic Schools provides the following guidelines.

1.  When a child is on medication for a short term, immediately following an illness, the parent must determine if it is in the child’s and the school’s best interest to keep the student at home during this period of recuperation.

2. If medication is necessary to maintain the student in school and administration of the medication cannot be scheduled outside of school, the parent must adhere to the following guidelines.

     A.  A written order for administration of the  medication must be obtained from the student’s licensed prescriber.  This order must include:

 -       Student’s name
-       Date of birth
-       Licensed prescriber signature
-       Name of medication, dosage, frequency, and time of administration
-       Date of prescription and date of order
-       Discontinuation date
-       Diagnosis requiring medication

       B.   All medication must be brought to school in the original package or an appropriately labeled container which includes the following.

-       Student’s name
-       Prescription number
-       Medication name/dosage
-       Administration routine and/or other directions

3. A written request shall be submitted to the principal asking that the medication be allowed during school hours.  Ordinarily, medication should be delivered to the school be a responsible adult, not a student.  The medication is stored in a locked cabinet in the school office.

Under a new Illinois law, students are allowed to keep asthma inhalers with them.  In order for a student to carry an inhaler, parents must request and complete a “Authorization for Self-Administration of Asthma Medicine.”

This authorization is kept in the office and is effective during the school year for which it is granted.  The authorization must be renewed each school year. Inhalers may still be kept in the school office or teacher’s desk if you prefer.  The safety of all students remains a priority.
